California Sierra Braces for Dangerous Winter Storm: Up to 30 Inches of Snow and 55 MPH Winds Expected Through Sunday Night

Shaver Lake, CA – A powerful winter storm is creating dangerous and potentially life-threatening conditions across California’s Sierra Nevada, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected to continue through Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for high-elevation regions, including Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, and Sequoia National Park. Snowfall totals are forecast to range between 10 and 30 inches, especially above 7,000 feet in Madera and Mariposa Counties.

Wind gusts reaching up to 55 mph are significantly worsening conditions, creating whiteout visibility in some areas. Officials warn that visibility could drop below a quarter mile, making travel across mountain passes extremely dangerous or even impossible.

High-impact areas include Lodgepole, Giant Forest, Tuolumne Meadows, and Huntington Lake. Authorities strongly advise against non-essential travel, as road closures may occur without warning. Drivers who must travel are urged to carry tire chains, emergency supplies, and ensure their vehicles are winter-ready.

Steep and winding routes near Lake Thomas Edison and Florence Lake pose additional risks, with icy surfaces making braking and acceleration hazardous. Heavy snow accumulation also raises concerns about damage to power lines and communication infrastructure.

The storm is expected to ease late Sunday night, but lingering travel disruptions may continue into Monday morning. Officials urge residents and visitors to stay updated and prioritize safety during this severe weather event.
