An Ohio father’s complaint about a messy room escalated into an alleged assault that left his daughter unable to breathe, police say.
An Ohio father is facing felony charges after police say he grabbed his adult daughter by the throat and squeezed until she could not breathe — all because he didn’t like the state of her bedroom.
Jeffrey Canzonetta, 56, of Vienna Township, was arrested Saturday after deputies from the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic violence call at the family’s residence on Warner Road around 1:30 p.m.
“She told deputies her father had been acting crazy — and that he had pushed both her and her mother in the hallway.”
According to the sheriff’s office report, the confrontation began when Canzonetta walked into his daughter’s room to say hello. When he didn’t like what he saw, he started criticizing the cleanliness of the space — making what investigators described as “negative statements” — and kept inching closer to his daughter as his comments escalated.
The adult daughter repeatedly asked her father to leave her room. He allegedly refused.
The situation soon spilled into the hallway. Canzonetta’s wife told law enforcement she was woken up by the sound of shouting, went to intervene — and was shoved to the ground by her husband, deputies say.
When the daughter saw her mother get pushed, she grabbed her phone and tried to call 911. That’s when Canzonetta allegedly seized her by the neck and choked her. The victim told investigators she was unable to breathe during the attack.
Canzonetta was not at the home when deputies arrived, but he was tracked down at his workplace later that same day and placed under arrest. He was booked into the Trumbull County Jail before posting $7,500 bond on Monday and walking free.
He now faces two counts of misdemeanor domestic violence and one count of felony strangulation. As of the time of this reporting, the case had not yet appeared in the county’s online court docket. Canzonetta is due back in court today, May 14.
