Florida man shot at a family of 4 on I-4 — a bullet went through the child's booster seat

TAMPA, Florida — A routine afternoon on the highway turned into a terrifying life-or-death chase for a family of four — including a young child — after a Florida man allegedly opened fire on their SUV and refused to stop.

The incident unfolded on April 29 along one of the Tampa area’s busiest stretches of road, leaving investigators stunned by both the violence and the suspect’s reaction when caught.

A Chase That Stretched Across Multiple Highways

The shooting began near the intersection of Wiggins Road and Highway 92 on the afternoon of April 29.

A 911 caller alerted the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, reporting an active car-to-car shooting. The caller said a suspect was aggressively chasing an SUV carrying a family.

What followed was a high-speed pursuit across several major roadways — westbound on Highway 92, northbound on Park Road, and then eastbound onto Interstate 4.

Deputies say shots were fired continuously throughout the entire chase.

The family finally managed to escape by exiting I-4 onto County Line Road. The suspect kept driving east.

A Bullet Went Through the Child’s Booster Seat

When Hillsborough County deputies located the family’s SUV, what they found was alarming.

Multiple bullet holes were scattered across the vehicle’s frame.

One bullet had completely penetrated the back seat — passing directly through the area where a child’s booster seat was positioned.

Somehow, no one in the vehicle was physically injured. But the family had just lived through one of the most frightening experiences imaginable.

Suspect Caught, Then Admitted Everything

Within hours of the shooting, detectives identified and arrested the suspect — Nicolas Totherow.

Totherow waived his Miranda rights and spoke freely with investigators. According to court documents, he admitted to firing at the SUV. His reason: the family’s vehicle had cut him off and brake-checked him twice.

What shocked investigators most was what came next.

Totherow explicitly stated he intended to kill the driver — and expressed zero remorse for what he had done, including the fact that a child was in that vehicle.

Facing a Long List of Felony Charges

Totherow is currently being held on a pre-trial detention motion filed by prosecutors. The charges he faces include attempted murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, armed possession of a controlled substance, and driving with a suspended license.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has not released details on what may have led to the initial confrontation between the two vehicles before the shooting began.

Road Rage Is Becoming Deadlier

Incidents like this are a stark reminder of how quickly a moment of anger behind the wheel can turn fatal.

Experts who study traffic violence have noted a sharp rise in road rage shootings across the country over the past several years. Families, including children, are increasingly caught in the middle.

In this case, the only thing standing between a young child and a bullet was inches of car seat foam.
