Residents across Philadelphia woke up to a sharp cold snap Wednesday, with a freeze warning in effect through 9 a.m. The alert covers most of the region, signaling a brief return to winter-like conditions even as spring gets underway.
Early morning temperatures dropped into the upper 20s and low 30s, cold enough to pose a risk to plants and early crops. Areas such as upper Bucks County and parts of Lehigh and Northampton counties were excluded from the warning, as the growing season has not officially begun there.
Despite the chilly start, the day brings some relief. Under clear skies and steady sunshine, temperatures are expected to climb into the low to mid-50s across much of the region. Coastal areas near the Jersey Shore will remain cooler, with highs staying in the upper 40s.
The cold pattern will linger one more night, with temperatures again dipping close to freezing. This is well below the seasonal average low of around 41°F for this time of year.
However, a noticeable warm-up is on the way. By Thursday afternoon, temperatures rebound into the low 60s, followed by a more significant rise into the 70s by Friday. The mild trend continues through the weekend, offering comfortable spring conditions.
Looking ahead, early next week brings even warmer weather, with highs expected to reach the low 80s under sunny skies—marking a dramatic shift from the midweek freeze.
Residents are advised to protect sensitive plants during the cold mornings, as conditions improve steadily heading into the weekend.
