MOUNT AIRY, Maryland — A man is dead after the fuel tanker he was driving overturned on Interstate 70 in the early hours of Tuesday morning, sending thousands of gallons of diesel spilling across the highway and forcing a lengthy closure in Frederick County.
Maryland State Police say the crash was reported at approximately 1:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-70, near mile marker 61.
The driver was the only person in the vehicle.
What Happened on I-70
According to MSP, the tractor-trailer was traveling westbound when it veered off the road to the right and overturned.
The tanker was carrying 7,700 gallons of diesel fuel at the time of the crash.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and pulled the driver from the wreckage. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
What caused the truck to leave the road is still unknown. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
Major Fuel Spill Shut Down Westbound Lanes for Hours
The overturned tanker caused a significant diesel fuel leak, creating a hazardous situation on one of Maryland’s busiest travel corridors.
Westbound lanes of I-70 near the Route 75 exit — also known as the New Market exit — were closed as hazardous materials crews moved in to contain and clean up the spill.
The closure stretched through the early morning commute hours, affecting drivers heading west through Frederick County.
All westbound lanes were fully reopened by 8:30 a.m., police confirmed.
Driver’s Identity Has Not Been Released
As of Tuesday morning, Maryland State Police have not released the name of the driver who was killed.
Investigators are continuing to work the scene and gather information about what led up to the crash.
No other vehicles were involved, and no additional injuries were reported.
This is a developing story. Updates will be added as Maryland State Police release more information.
