Palmetto, Georgia – A 34-year-old mother of three was tragically shot and killed outside an elementary school in Georgia while delivering for DoorDash, prompting a lockdown and large police response on Tuesday morning.
Authorities identified the victim as Eboni Anderson, who was working as a delivery driver when the incident occurred outside Palmetto Elementary School shortly after 11 a.m. Officers responded to reports of gunfire and discovered Anderson’s body near the front of the school building.
School Placed on Hard Lockdown
Following the gunfire, the school was immediately placed under a “hard lockdown” after a staff member activated an emergency alert system. Officials confirmed that no students or faculty members were injured during the incident.
As a precaution, more than 550 students were relocated for the remainder of the school day to a nearby campus. School administrators later reassured families that individuals inside the building were never in direct danger.
In a message to parents, Principal Jacqueline Bowens acknowledged the emotional impact of the tragedy while emphasizing that the school community remained safe throughout the incident.
Suspect Arrested After High-Speed Chase
Police identified the suspect as Christopher Loris Ates, 39, who was taken into custody after allegedly fleeing the scene. Authorities said the suspect led officers on a high-speed chase that ended when he crashed along Highway 96 near the county line separating Houston and Twiggs counties.
Ates was booked into the Houston County Jail on multiple charges, including reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and second-degree cruelty to children. Law enforcement officials also indicated that additional charges, including murder, are being finalized in Fulton County.
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from what appears to be a domestic-related dispute. Officials have not released further details regarding the relationship between the victim and the suspect.
Community in Mourning
Anderson was the mother of 8-year-old twins and an 18-month-old child. Family members described her as a devoted and loving parent who worked hard to provide for her children.
“She was a great mother. She loved her boys. She did everything she could for them,” said Tariq Robinson, Anderson’s stepfather.
Fulton County Schools confirmed that Anderson was a parent within the district, though her children did not attend Palmetto Elementary.
A fundraising campaign established to assist with funeral expenses described Anderson as a “beautiful, kind, and gentle soul,” noting the deep loss felt by those who knew her. Organizers shared that the family is struggling to process the sudden and devastating tragedy.
Ongoing Investigation
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have not released additional information about possible motives or whether more charges will be filed.
DoorDash released a statement expressing condolences to Anderson’s family and confirming that the company is cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation.
As the case moves forward, the community remains shaken by the loss of a young mother whose life ended during what should have been a routine workday.
