He Asked to Leave Jail for 'One Last Visit' With His Dying Baby — The Judge Said No. Two Days Later, the Infant Was Gone.

A Kansas father wanted one final goodbye with his dying baby boy.

A judge said no.

Two days later, the infant was dead.

Now that same father is facing murder charges.

Devin Bemis, 33, of Wichita, Kansas, was charged with first-degree murder on May 20 in connection with the death of his 5-month-old son, Grayson Bemis.

But this story started months earlier — and it is one that is hard to read.

It Started With a 911 Call

On January 21, police were called to Bemis’ home after a 2-month-old baby was found unresponsive. First responders rushed in and performed CPR on little Grayson, who was in extremely critical condition.

Days later, authorities accused Bemis of causing serious abusive head trauma and permanent injury to Grayson. His twin brother Elijah had also allegedly been abused.

Bemis was arrested on January 26 and locked up on a $1 million bond.

The Request That Shocked Everyone

Three months into his time behind bars, Bemis asked a judge for permission to leave jail — just for one visit to Wesley Medical Center to see Grayson one last time.

The judge denied the request on April 24.

Grayson died two days later on April 26.

Now He Faces Murder

An amended criminal complaint was filed on May 20, adding first-degree murder to the charges Bemis already faced. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 12 and remains in custody.

Grayson never got the chance to take his first steps, say his first word, or grow up alongside his twin brother Elijah.

He was only 5 months old.
