A Wisconsin man allegedly planned every detail — right down to picking out the perfect knife at Walmart — before attacking his ex-girlfriend as she held their baby daughter.
What Happened
Ivan Aldair Canchola-Garcia, 28, of La Crosse, was charged this week with attempted first-degree intentional homicide following the May 15 attack.
According to a criminal complaint, Canchola-Garcia showed up at his ex-girlfriend’s home on 16th Street South wearing a mask and gloves. Police found her with multiple stab wounds to her neck, armpit, and shoulder blade.
She was holding their 11-month-old daughter at the time. The baby was not hurt.
The Walmart Trip
Surveillance footage allegedly shows Canchola-Garcia purchasing the knife at a local Walmart just hours before the stabbing. Police used Walmart security video and license plate readers to place him at the store.
After the attack, he was caught on camera disposing of the knife, gloves, and mask at a nearby Kwik Trip convenience store. Officers recovered all items.
His Own Words
After the alleged attack, Canchola-Garcia reportedly told a friend:
“I did it. I did what I needed to do. I tried to kill her. I went for the neck.”
Where Things Stand
Canchola-Garcia was arrested and charged with:
- Attempted first-degree intentional homicide

He is currently held at La Crosse County jail on a $1 million bond.
