Sugar Land, Texas — A nanny is recovering in the hospital after a stranger allegedly attacked her with a baseball bat while she was out on a walk with the 17-month-old baby in her care — and the man responsible is still on the loose.
The attack happened Friday morning on Fluor Daniel Drive in Sugar Land. The woman, who did not want to show her face during a hospital interview, described a terrifying and unprovoked assault that came out of nowhere.
A Stranger Pulled Up — Then Everything Changed
The nanny said she was walking along the path when a man pulled up in his vehicle and opened his door — as if he was about to ask her a question.
What happened next left her fighting for her life.
“As soon as I seen the bat, he just turned around and just started running towards me to attack me,” she said.
The first blow landed on the back of her head. But he didn’t stop there.
“He was just swinging and swinging. The baby was crying hysterically,” she said. “I just put my arms up to defend myself, to make sure he wasn’t going to hit me more on the head. And that’s when he hit my arm and shattered my arm.”
She Fought Back and Protected the Baby
Even in the middle of the brutal attack, the nanny’s instincts kicked in.
She pushed the baby out of harm’s way as the blows kept coming.
When she started screaming louder, the attacker ran back to his car and drove away.
A bystander approached shortly after and called for help. The woman has been hospitalized ever since.
She still cannot make sense of what happened or why she was targeted.
“I don’t know if he’s trying to kidnap. Was he trying to rob me? Kill me?” she said.
Strength, Faith and a Message for Others
Despite the trauma, the woman said her faith and her family kept her going during the attack.
“God gave me the strength to fight back,” she said. “All I could think of was my kids, my grandbabies, my husband, my family.”
Now focused on recovery, she hopes her story prevents this from happening to someone else.
“I’m just thankful to be here and tell my story and make sure that this doesn’t happen again to anybody else,” she said.
She described the attacker as appearing to be in his 30s or 40s. Details were a blur given the chaos of the assault.
Police Still Searching for Suspect
