A terrifying night that began with a mother trying to protect her children ended with a monster behind bars — and two teenage boys being called heroes in a packed Indiana courtroom.
Robert Vanatta, 30, of Indiana, was sentenced to 20 years in prison this week after being convicted on 14 felony charges stemming from a horrific domestic violence incident in March 2025. The charges included criminal confinement, intimidation, strangulation, and domestic battery in the presence of a child.
It started when Vanatta’s wife packed up her three children — a 5-year-old daughter and two teenage sons — and fled to a Candlewood Suites hotel in Greenwood, Indiana, to escape him. She even begged the front desk clerk not to reveal she was there.
But Vanatta tracked them down anyway.
When the family tried to quietly slip away, Vanatta rammed their vehicle off the road, dragged them out at gunpoint, and forced them all into his truck. He punched his wife in the face hard enough to knock off her glasses. Then came the words that chilled everyone in the courtroom: “I’ve got something for you when we get home.”
He followed it with an even darker threat — “I’m going to shoot every one of you.”
That’s when his stepsons fought back. One teenager grabbed a box cutter and stabbed Vanatta to stop the attack. His wife managed to get hold of the gun and fired warning shots until Vanatta finally pulled over and let them go. The family ran back to the hotel and called police.
During sentencing, Judge Roesener looked directly at the teenage boys and commended them for their extraordinary courage — saying their quick thinking almost certainly saved their entire family’s lives.
Vanatta tried to claim he “blacked out.” The jury wasn’t buying it. He was found guilty on all 14 counts.
