When Iris Damaris Ruiz crashed her car on a Miami road last Sunday, it was her own 12-year-old son who made sure justice caught up with her — waving down a Florida Highway Patrol trooper while carrying his 2-year-old sister in his arms.
The gray Nissan had heavy front-end damage and was already smoking when the trooper arrived. A bystander was attempting to pull Ruiz from the driver’s seat, but she refused to get out — even as flames began spreading through the engine. It was only when the trooper ordered her out directly that she finally stood up.
The trooper noted the smell of alcohol on Ruiz, slurred speech, and bloodshot, watery eyes. She could not recall how the crash happened and was unable to remove her driver’s license from her wallet. During a field sobriety test, she started counting from “1,000-2” and repeatedly lost her sequence. A breath test confirmed a BAC of 0.216 — nearly three times the legal limit in Florida.
“Her Mother’s Day was spent driving drunk with two children in the car, which she could have killed.”— Judge Mindy Glazer, at bond hearing
Ruiz faces a serious stack of charges from the incident.
At a bond hearing the following day, Judge Glazer released Ruiz to Pretrial Services but prohibited all contact with her children. When Ruiz’s public defender requested supervised visitation, the judge refused outright — telling her to get clean first and let the dependency court decide whether she was fit to parent.
Both children are now in the care of their maternal grandmother. The 12-year-old suffered minor injuries; the 2-year-old appeared unharmed. Ruiz is due back in court on July 9.
