HONOLULU — Honolulu police have arrested a woman following a car theft from a parking lot that ended in a multi-vehicle crash Thursday evening.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, the incident happened around 7:48 p.m. in the parking lot of a retail establishment in the Honolulu area. Officers said a 50-year-old man had parked his vehicle and briefly left the area.
When the man returned, he noticed his vehicle’s engine was running. As he approached and opened the driver’s side door, he found a woman sitting behind the wheel, police said.
Authorities said the suspect immediately drove the vehicle out of the parking lot before the owner could stop her. Shortly afterward, the stolen car was involved in a multi-car crash in the surrounding area.
Police confirmed that emergency crews responded to the crash scene, where the suspect had to be extricated from the vehicle due to the damage sustained during the collision. No life-threatening injuries were reported at the time of the arrest, though police did not release details on whether other drivers were injured.
The vehicle’s owner was able to identify the suspect at the scene, and officers placed the woman under arrest without incident, according to HPD.
The suspect remains in custody as detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the theft and subsequent crash. Possible charges have not yet been formally announced, and police said additional details may be released as the investigation progresses.
