It Started With Cocaine in Someone's Drink — How a South Indy Bar Night Ended in Shooting and Carjacking

A late-night incident outside a south Indianapolis bar turned violent after what police say began as a dispute between two acquaintances. The situation escalated into a shooting and carjacking, leaving one man injured and another facing multiple felony charges.

According to investigators, the altercation involved 32-year-old Tyler Inman and a man he reportedly knew. Witnesses told police the conflict may have started over an attempt to tamper with drinks using cocaine, which quickly led to a heated confrontation.

What Happened

Authorities say the two men eventually moved from inside the bar to the parking lot, where tensions intensified. The argument reportedly turned physical near the victim’s dark blue 2026 Genesis G70.

During the struggle, police allege that Inman gained control of a firearm that was inside the vehicle. Court documents state that he then fired at the victim before fleeing the scene in the victim’s car.

Surveillance footage from the area reportedly supports the victim’s account. The video is said to show Inman kicking the victim before the fight escalates, followed by the moment he grabs the weapon and fires.

Immediate Police Response

Officers later located the stolen vehicle abandoned in a nearby alley. Inside, they found a loaded gun magazine in the glove compartment, and noted that the license plate had been removed.

The victim, who survived the shooting, provided information about the suspect’s possible location, leading police to an Extended Stay hotel in the Castleton area.

Arrest and Investigation

Several hours after the incident, officers responded to a call at the hotel involving an intoxicated man who was reportedly unable to exit an Uber. That individual was identified as Tyler Inman.

SWAT teams were later called in to safely execute a warrant at the hotel. Inman was taken into custody without further incident.

During questioning, he allegedly admitted to being involved in a fight but claimed he was unaware that any shots had been fired during the struggle.

Charges Filed

Inman is now being held at the Marion County Adult Detention Center and faces a series of serious charges, including:

  • Battery with a deadly weapon (Level 5 Felony)
  • Theft while using a firearm (Level 5 Felony)
  • Unlawful possession of a handgun (Level 5 Felony)
  • Auto theft (Level 6 Felony)
  • Criminal mischief (Class B Misdemeanor)

Officials also confirmed that Inman has a prior conviction for domestic battery, which legally prohibits him from possessing a firearm. This history has contributed to the severity of the current charges and a request for a higher bond.

What Happens Next

As of now, court records show that formal charges have been filed, but an initial hearing date has not yet been scheduled. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements.

Community Impact

Incidents like this have raised concerns about safety in nightlife areas, especially when disputes escalate quickly and involve weapons. Law enforcement officials are urging residents to report suspicious behavior and avoid confrontations that could turn dangerous.

The victim is expected to recover, but the case serves as a stark reminder of how quickly situations can spiral into violence.
