KANSAS CITY, Missouri — A 22-year-old woman is behind bars, accused of stabbing her own mother to death in the Northland in the early hours of Thursday morning.
It is a case that has shaken the community — and the details emerging from investigators paint a deeply troubling picture.
How the Night Unfolded
Just after midnight on Thursday, Kansas City, Missouri police responded to a disturbance call at a home in the 4900 block of NE Topping Avenue.
When officers arrived, they located a woman matching the description of a suspect already wanted in a separate case.
That woman was identified as Makaila Konomos, 22.
As the investigation continued, officers were directed to a second address — a residence in the 5700 block of NE 49th Street.
There, they made a devastating discovery.
The Victim
Inside the home, police found 46-year-old Crystal Tapia — Konomos’ own mother — stabbed to death.
Later that same day, Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Zachary Thompson announced he had filed first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges against Konomos.
“Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, we allege that the defendant knowingly, after deliberation, caused the death of the victim by cutting her with a knife on or about June 4th of this year,” Thompson said in a statement.
He added: “This was a tragic and devastating loss of life, and our hearts go out to the victim’s family and loved ones.”
Where the Case Stands Now
Konomos is currently being held at the Clay County Jail on a $1 million bond.
She is scheduled for an arraignment hearing on Monday, June 8.
The first-degree murder charge means prosecutors are alleging the killing was premeditated — not an act committed in the heat of the moment, but one carried out with deliberate intent.
