A 22-year-old man from Kenosha is facing serious criminal charges after a gun reportedly discharged while he was cleaning it, leaving a 4-year-old child critically injured.
According to prosecutors, the incident happened on April 7 inside the home. The man, identified as Travon Prater, told police he was reassembling a Glock 17 when he inserted a magazine and the weapon unexpectedly fired. The child was nearby at the time and was struck by the bullet.
Authorities say the child suffered a gunshot wound that entered through the buttock and exited near the pelvis. Due to the severity of the injuries, the child was airlifted to Children’s Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where emergency surgery was performed.
Investigators reported finding the firearm on a kitchen table, along with additional weapons and drug-related items inside the residence. Police also stated that marijuana was found in Prater’s possession at the time.
Prater now faces multiple charges, including negligent handling of a dangerous weapon, child neglect causing great bodily harm, and THC possession. Officials have also labeled him a repeat offender, which could impact the severity of potential penalties.
The case has raised renewed concerns about firearm safety, especially around children. Prater is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on April 16.
