Kentucky Deputy Critically Wounded in Shooting Identified as Former Chicago Police Officer

A Kentucky sheriff’s deputy who was critically injured in a shooting this week has been identified as a former Chicago police officer with years of service in law enforcement.

Deputy Rick Coyle, currently serving with the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office, was shot Thursday evening while carrying out emergency guardianship paperwork at a residence in Sturgis, a small town near the Indiana border. Authorities say the situation escalated quickly, leading to an exchange of gunfire between Coyle and a 60-year-old suspect.

During the incident, Coyle was struck by gunfire. He was airlifted to a hospital in Evansville, Indiana, where he remains in critical condition as doctors continue to fight to stabilize him. The suspect involved in the shooting was also shot and later pronounced dead.

Before joining the sheriff’s office in Kentucky, Coyle had built a long career in Chicago, where he served as a police officer and was part of a SWAT team. Former colleagues describe him as committed, disciplined, and deeply dedicated to public safety.

The news has shaken both his current and former communities. Friends, colleagues, and local officials have shared messages of support, remembering his decades of service and the impact he has had on those around him. One longtime friend described him as someone who has “always put others before himself.”

As the investigation continues, many are hoping for Coyle’s recovery while reflecting on the risks officers face in the line of duty every day.
