Knife-Wielding Man Fatally Shot During Mental Health Call at Columbia Apartment Complex

A late-night mental health call in Columbia, Maryland turned tragic when three Howard County police officers shot and killed a man who authorities say refused to drop a knife early Sunday morning.

The incident unfolded just after midnight outside Patuxent Commons, a newly opened apartment community on Freetown Road in the Hickory Ridge neighborhood. The complex is known for offering affordable housing for senior citizens and individuals living with disabilities.

How the Encounter Began

According to investigators, police received a 911 call at approximately 12:09 a.m. from a man who allegedly made threats to harm himself.

Dispatch audio reveals first responders were speaking directly with the caller when he began making suicidal statements. Officers arrived at the apartment complex but were initially unable to locate him inside his unit.

As they searched the area and requested additional backup, officers exited the building and reported seeing the man in the parking lot walking toward them with a knife in one hand.

Police say they repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon. When he allegedly refused, three officers opened fire.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

What Witnesses Heard

Residents inside the building described a terrifying scene.

One witness said he heard six gunshots and described the moment as “very frightening.” From his vantage point inside the building, he did not see the knife but recalled the man shouting phrases including, “Let’s party. I want to party.”

Investigators later confirmed a knife was recovered near the man’s body, and officials stated the entire incident was captured on officers’ body-worn cameras.

Independent Investigation Underway

The case is now being reviewed by the Maryland Office of the Attorney General, which handles all fatal police-involved incidents in the state.

Authorities have up to 20 business days to release body-camera footage and two business days to publicly identify both the deceased man and the officers involved.

Howard County police have declined to provide additional comment while the investigation remains active.

A Community-Focused Building Shaken

The shooting occurred just steps away from a location that had celebrated its grand opening only months ago. Patuxent Commons opened late last year as a $44 million public-private partnership led by the Autism Society of Maryland.

Approximately one quarter of the building’s units are designated for individuals with disabilities, while 40 percent are reserved as affordable housing for seniors.

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony in November 2025, Calvin Ball praised the development as a reflection of community values and inclusion.

In a joint statement, the Autism Society of Maryland and Mission First Housing Group expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it a “disturbingly tragic event.” Both organizations confirmed they have reached out to the family and are providing grief counselors and support staff to assist residents coping with shock and trauma.

“Our immediate focus is on supporting residents and staff,” the statement said, emphasizing their commitment to safety, inclusion, and transparency.

Second Fatal Incident This Year

This marks the second death involving Howard County police in 2026. The Attorney General’s office is also investigating a separate fatal crash in January connected to a police traffic stop attempt.

As the investigation continues, residents and community leaders are calling for full transparency and a thorough review of the events that led to the shooting.

The coming weeks are expected to bring more clarity as body-camera footage and additional details are released.
