Oswego, New York — A disturbing incident in Oswego has led to criminal charges against a local man after a 14-year-old boy with autism, who was lost and seeking help, was allegedly met with a firearm instead of assistance.
According to the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on April 11 when the teenager, who had been riding his bike, became disoriented after his phone battery died. In an attempt to find his way, the boy approached a nearby home and rang the doorbell, hoping for directions.
Authorities say the homeowner, identified as Philip Nichols, responded by opening a window and allegedly pointing a handgun directly at the boy. Frightened, the teen immediately left the property.
However, the situation escalated further. Police allege that Nichols then entered his Tesla SUV, armed with a shotgun equipped with a flashlight, and followed the boy for several minutes. During this time, he reportedly pointed the weapon at the teenager and made a threatening remark, intensifying the already terrifying situation for the child.
Deputies later arrived at Nichols’ home to investigate. Officials say Nichols answered the door while holding both a long gun and a handgun. After being ordered to drop the weapons, he complied. During questioning, Nichols allegedly admitted to pointing firearms at the boy and following him, claiming he feared for his own safety and that of his family.
Law enforcement seized multiple weapons from the property. While Nichols reportedly holds permits for several handguns, only one was recovered at the scene.
Nichols, 46, now faces multiple charges, including menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, and acting in a manner injurious to a child. As of now, he is not in custody but is scheduled to appear in court on April 30.
The case has raised serious concerns about how vulnerable individuals, especially children with special needs, are treated in moments of distress. What began as a simple attempt by a lost teenager to seek help quickly turned into a frightening encounter that could have ended far worse.
Authorities have not released the identity of the minor involved, and the investigation remains ongoing.
