Las Vegas, Nevada — A tragic domestic incident in central Las Vegas has left a young family shattered, after a man was arrested in connection with the death of his wife during what police describe as a heated argument about their daughter’s future.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call around 3 a.m. Tuesday from a residence on Esmeralda Avenue. The caller, identified as 38-year-old Roelmer Sanchez-Garrido, initially requested medical help, telling dispatchers that his wife was injured. Moments later, he reportedly clarified that she was no longer breathing.
When emergency responders arrived, they found Sanchez-Garrido outside the home pacing with the couple’s 2-year-old daughter. Inside the residence, paramedics discovered Vanesa Rodrigues-Valdes lying on the floor, partially covered with a blanket.
First responders immediately noticed signs that raised concern. According to police, the victim showed visible bruising on her face and neck, along with early indications of rigor mortis. The circumstances prompted paramedics to request law enforcement assistance, and responding officers quickly deemed the situation suspicious.
Argument That Turned Fatal
Investigators later determined that the couple had been arguing about where to raise their young daughter. Police say the disagreement centered on whether to move back to Cuba or remain in the United States.
During questioning, Sanchez-Garrido allegedly told officers that the argument escalated. At some point, he admitted grabbing his wife by the throat. Authorities say he claimed he did not fully remember what happened next, but realized she had stopped breathing shortly afterward.
Police allege he attempted CPR but was unsuccessful. He then covered her body with a blanket, reportedly to shield their daughter from witnessing the aftermath.
Disturbing Details From Neighbors
As part of the investigation, officers spoke with neighbors who provided additional insight into the events leading up to the incident.
One neighbor told police that earlier in the day, Rodrigues-Valdes had asked for help hiding passports, fearing her husband might take them. The concern appeared tied to the ongoing dispute about relocating their child.
Another neighbor reported being awakened around 2 a.m. by someone knocking on his window. He later identified that person as Sanchez-Garrido, who allegedly handed him containers filled with jewelry along with contact details for family members. The neighbor told police the man said he had done something “very bad” and asked him to call 911.
Arrest and Charges
Sanchez-Garrido was taken into custody shortly after officers arrived. Following an interview at police headquarters, he was formally charged with one count of open murder, authorities confirmed.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing, and additional details may emerge as forensic analysis and interviews continue.
A Child Left Behind
At the center of the tragedy is the couple’s toddler daughter, who was present at the scene. Authorities have not released details about her current custody situation, but cases like this often involve coordination with child protective services to ensure the child’s safety and care.
Ongoing Investigation
Officials have not yet released the official cause of death pending further examination. However, early findings at the scene suggest the death was the result of a violent physical altercation.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department continues to investigate the case, urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly domestic disputes can escalate into irreversible consequences, leaving lasting impacts on families and communities.
