Man Fatally Shot by Police in Westmont After Alleged Armed Encounter

A man lost his life early Friday morning following a confrontation with officers from the Los Angeles Police Department in the Westmont area, raising concerns in a neighborhood already unsettled by nearby criminal activity.

According to authorities, officers were responding to a reported assault with a deadly weapon at a gas station along South Vermont Avenue around 1 a.m. While searching the area for the suspect, police encountered a man walking along a sidewalk who matched the description provided in the earlier call.

Officials said the man, later identified as Eliar Real Hernandez, was holding a handgun at the time. Officers reportedly issued multiple commands, but police say he did not comply. The situation escalated when Hernandez allegedly turned toward the officers, leading them to open fire.

Emergency aid was immediately provided at the scene, but despite efforts, Hernandez was pronounced dead by responding paramedics.

Investigators later confirmed that a loaded 9-millimeter ghost gun was recovered from his possession. No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.

The shooting occurred less than a mile from another active crime scene, which authorities believe may be connected, though details remain limited.

As the investigation continues, the incident has left residents shaken, with many awaiting further clarity on what led to the fatal encounter.
