Albuquerque, New Mexico — A tragic incident in Albuquerque has left a young man dead after he was struck by a bullet during what authorities describe as a road rage shooting involving another vehicle.
According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, 21-year-old Roberto Carlos Pineda Arriaza was unintentionally caught in the middle of a violent encounter on Saturday. Investigators say the victim was simply showing his newly purchased motorcycle to a friend near Bridge Boulevard and Sunset Road when gunfire suddenly erupted in the area.
What Happened
Authorities allege that Rory Horowitz, who was traveling in a Mitsubishi vehicle with Ellyssa Salazar, became involved in a road rage confrontation with another driver. During the incident, Horowitz is accused of firing multiple shots at that vehicle.
One of those bullets struck Arriaza in the head, even though he was not involved in the altercation. Witnesses described the moment as chaotic and unexpected, with shots ringing out while the victim stood nearby with his friend.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported Arriaza to a hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries three days later.
Arrests and Charges
Investigators identified Horowitz as the primary suspect and tracked him along with Salazar to a residence in El Paso, where both were taken into custody.
Horowitz initially faced charges including shooting at or from a motor vehicle, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. Following Arriaza’s death, authorities confirmed they are seeking to upgrade the charges to include an open count of murder.
Salazar has been charged with tampering with evidence and harboring a fugitive.
Officials also confirmed that another individual involved in the road rage incident was arrested separately by the Albuquerque Police Department on charges related to reckless driving and fleeing law enforcement. However, investigators stated there is no evidence that this individual fired any shots.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are continuing their investigation and are working to locate the Mitsubishi vehicle involved in the shooting. Extradition proceedings are underway to bring the suspects back to New Mexico to face charges.
The case has raised renewed concerns about the dangers of road rage incidents, especially when innocent bystanders become victims of unpredictable violence.
Community Impact
What began as a simple moment between friends quickly turned into a devastating loss. Family members and community residents are mourning the death of a young man whose life ended in circumstances entirely beyond his control.
Officials are urging drivers to remain calm on the road and avoid escalating conflicts, emphasizing that even brief moments of anger can lead to irreversible consequences.
