Michigan Mom Watched Boyfriend Beat Her 3-Year-Old to Death — Took Him to 5 Different Hospitals to Hide It

A heartbreaking and disturbing case has emerged from Detroit, Michigan, where a young mother allowed her boyfriend to repeatedly beat and torture her 3-year-old son — until the little boy lost his life.

Michael Yharbrough, 25, of Detroit, was convicted Monday on charges of felony murder, torture, and first-degree child abuse.

What Happened?

Brianna Simmons allowed her boyfriend, Michael Yharbrough, to move into her home — and that’s when the nightmare began for her toddler son.

Prosecutors say Yharbrough repeatedly beat and tortured the 3-year-old boy. But instead of protecting her child, Simmons helped cover up the abuse.

Every time Yharbrough injured the boy, Simmons would take her son to a different medical facility to avoid raising suspicion. According to prosecutors, she visited at least five different hospitals or medical centers before her son ultimately died in March.

CPS Had Warned Them — But the Child Was Sent Back

One of the most troubling parts of this case is the role of Child Protective Services.

The child had been removed from the home multiple times by CPS — each time returning with additional broken bones.

Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Brittany Johnson told the court, “Her 3-year-old child died in March of this year after multiple removals by CPS, and the child was returned to his mother.”

Johnson added that the broken bones were “only alleged to have happened after Miss Simmons allowed this individual to move into her home.”

It remains unclear why CPS continued to return the child to the home despite repeated signs of abuse. The agency has not responded to requests for comment.

The Mother Took a Plea Deal

Simmons took a plea deal in May and testified against Yharbrough in exchange for reduced charges.

Her original charges — first-degree murder, first-degree child abuse, and torture — were dropped in exchange for a single second-degree child abuse charge.

Prosecutor Johnson did not hold back: “She aided and abetted her co-defendant, and it led to this child’s ultimate death.”

Prosecutors have recommended Simmons receive one year in jail and three years of probation. Her sentencing is scheduled for June 23.

Yharbrough faces sentencing on June 26 — where he could spend the rest of his life in prison for felony murder.

A Child Who Deserved Better

This little boy was only 3 years old. He could not protect himself. The very people meant to keep him safe — his mother and the system — failed him completely.

As this case heads toward its final sentencing, many are left asking one painful question: Why was this child sent back home, again and again, until it was too late?

This case is still developing. Sentencing hearings are scheduled for later this month.
