SUFFOLK COUNTY, NEW YORK — A heartbreaking child abuse case has shocked New York after prosecutors revealed that a 7-year-old girl was allegedly kept home from school under false excuses, including a claimed trip to Disney World, while she was being tortured inside her home for months.
Authorities say little Jor’Dynn Duncan died after suffering prolonged abuse, starvation, neglect, and untreated injuries while living with three guardians who had custody of her.
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, emergency crews responded to a 911 call on the morning of Dec. 29, 2025, after guardian Emily Kelly reportedly told dispatchers the child was in cardiac arrest. Jor’Dynn was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk, where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigators say what they discovered afterward was deeply disturbing.
Officials stated that the Suffolk County Medical Examiner documented nearly 90 separate injuries on the child’s body. Prosecutors allege the girl suffered from a massive untreated infection caused by sharp force injuries and endured months of abuse before her death.
District Attorney Raymond Tierney described the case as one of “systematic cruelty and sadistic abuse” against a defenseless child.
According to prosecutors, Kelly, her mother Barbara Renner, and Kelly’s daughter Elyssa Seymore allegedly isolated the child from others and repeatedly prevented her from attending school. Authorities say school absences were explained away using false claims about illnesses, family emergencies, and even a supposed Disney World vacation.
Investigators allege the excuses were part of an effort to hide the abuse from teachers and authorities.
Court records show the three women had received full custody of Jor’Dynn in April 2025 through Suffolk County Child Protective Services. Prosecutors claim the abuse continued for nearly a year afterward.
The defendants now face multiple criminal charges:
- Emily Kelly, 50, is charged with second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, unlawful imprisonment, and child endangerment.
- Barbara Renner, 75, faces charges including second-degree manslaughter and child endangerment.
- Elyssa Seymore is charged with unlawful imprisonment and child endangerment.
All three defendants were arrested and are scheduled to return to court on June 23.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing evidence connected to the child’s death.
The tragic case has sparked outrage and renewed concerns about child welfare oversight, school absentee monitoring, and the warning signs of long-term abuse that may go unnoticed behind closed doors.
