PASCO, Wash. — A 46-year-old Pasco man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he forced a cattle truck off Highway 395, took control of the vehicle, and demanded $20,000 for the return of the livestock.
According to court records, the incident unfolded on the morning of May 27 when Clemente G. Esquivel was driving a Ford F-150 northbound on Highway 395.
Investigators say Esquivel crossed the highway median and began traveling southbound before pulling in front of a semi-truck transporting cattle. Authorities allege he repeatedly slammed on his brakes in an effort to force the truck driver to stop.
The truck driver reportedly attempted to avoid a collision while also ensuring the safety of the animals being transported. The situation ended when the driver pulled onto Eltopia West Road and stopped near Booker Auction, about 20 miles north of Pasco.
After the truck came to a stop, authorities say Esquivel approached the driver while yelling and using profanity. Court records allege that he demanded $20,000 in exchange for returning the cattle.
Investigators say the truck driver tried to get back into the vehicle but was prevented from doing so. Esquivel allegedly took control of the semi-truck and drove away with the trailer carrying the livestock.
Authorities later learned that Esquivel had allegedly recorded a video message demanding $20,000 for the safe return of the cattle. The video was reportedly sent to a friend of the truck driver.
While law enforcement officers were speaking with the truck driver about the incident, Esquivel unexpectedly returned to the area and approached investigators.
During questioning, Esquivel told officers that his wife owns the truck cab involved in the dispute. He claimed that after spotting the vehicle on the highway, he turned around and attempted to signal the driver to pull over.
Esquivel also acknowledged that the truck driver had previously been permitted to use the semi-truck. However, authorities have not disclosed details about the disagreement that may have led to the confrontation.
He was arrested and charged with first-degree theft, second-degree extortion, and reckless driving. Court records show he was later released after posting a $10,000 bond.
The case remains under investigation.
