A quiet afternoon at a popular Barnwell lake turned dangerous Wednesday when a 20-year-old man was shot while fishing — sending the surrounding community into immediate lockdown.
What Happened?
According to Barnwell Police Chief Michael Butts, the victim was fishing at Lake Edgar Brown when two unknown male suspects approached and shot him in the leg without warning.
The Suspects
Police described two suspects:
- One wearing all black clothing
- One wearing a camouflage jacket, described as stocky in build
Both suspects fled into nearby woods immediately after the shooting.
Search Underway
As of Wednesday evening, authorities had one person detained but were still working to confirm whether that individual was connected to the shooting.

- Aiken County Sheriff’s Office

The shooting triggered immediate precautionary measures across the neighborhood:

Victim’s Condition
The 20-year-old victim was airlifted to a hospital and is believed to be in stable condition, according to Chief Butts.
