After weeks of dry, dangerous conditions, the South is finally getting some much-needed rain — and it could not have come soon enough.
Where Did the Rain Come From?
The rain system originated over Texas before shifting east over the weekend, now soaking Florida and surrounding states.
How Much Rain Has Fallen?
The numbers tell the story:
- Birmingham, Alabama received 3.09 inches from April 28–29, setting a daily rainfall record
- Louisiana and southern Mississippi picked up 2 to 4 inches since Wednesday
- Heavy rain in Baton Rouge flooded a section of Interstate 10
Is More Rain Coming?
Yes — and that is good news.
The Climate Prediction Center’s 6 to 10 day outlook shows above-average rainfall expected across Florida and much of the Deep South heading into next weekend, as another frontal system moves in.
How Bad Is the Drought?
Very bad — especially in the Southeast:
- Every part of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Alabama is in drought
- Arkansas and Florida are both 99% in drought conditions
- Florida is experiencing its worst drought in 25 years
- Cities like Charleston, Columbia, Gainesville and Savannah are having their driest spring seasons on record
Bottom Line
This rain is a welcome relief, but experts warn it will take many more rounds to fully end the drought. For now, the region will take whatever nature provides.
