A tragic incident in Oakland has once again highlighted the risks faced by security personnel, even off duty. Kevin Nishita, a 56-year-old former officer, lost his life after being asked to work “just a few hours” on his day off.
Nishita was providing security for a television news crew when three suspects — Laron Gilbert, Shadihia Mitchell, and Hershel Hale — attempted to rob them of camera equipment in November 2021. During the robbery, Nishita was shot in the abdomen. He was rushed to the hospital but passed away three days later.
The case has now reached a conclusion in Alameda County court. Gilbert, identified as the gunman, received a sentence of 30 years to life after pleading no contest to first-degree murder. Mitchell and Hale were each sentenced to 25 years for robbery.
During sentencing, Nishita’s wife shared an emotional statement, expressing deep regret over encouraging him to take the short shift. Her words reflected the lasting pain carried by families of victims who never expected a routine work request to turn fatal.
Nishita served multiple departments during his career and was known for his dedication to public safety. He leaves behind his wife, two children, and three grandchildren.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly everyday situations can turn dangerous, even for experienced professionals.
