'She Was Trapped There': Michigan Woman Kept Starved Sister-in-Law Locked in Basement for 2 Years, Police Say

A shocking case of abuse has emerged from Saginaw, Michigan, where a 48-year-old woman is accused of imprisoning her 58-year-old sister-in-law in a locked basement for nearly two years — providing barely enough food and water to keep her alive.

Tasha Beamon was arrested last week and charged with unlawful imprisonment and first-degree abuse of a vulnerable adult, according to court records.

The victim’s ordeal came to light on March 15, when she allegedly broke a neighbor’s window with a metal pipe — her desperate attempt to get someone to call for help.

“She asks me to call the cops at first,” neighbor Colton Ehlow told local news. He described the woman as extremely frail — “skin and bones,” appearing decades older than her actual age.

Investigators who searched Beamon’s home found a locked basement door, a mattress, and containers of urine — evidence consistent with the victim’s account. Authorities say the woman had little to no access to food, water, or a bathroom throughout her imprisonment.

Hospital staff reportedly warned she was so malnourished she could have died.

Perhaps most disturbing? Authorities believe Beamon may have been collecting her sister-in-law’s disability payments the entire time she was imprisoned.

Beamon is currently held on $100,000 bond at Saginaw County Jail, with her next court date set for April 20.

But what exactly did investigators find inside that basement — and how did no one notice for two years?
