TOLEDO, Ohio — A mother trusted someone to watch her baby for just three days. She never imagined she would walk into a hospital room and be told her son was not breathing.
That is exactly what happened in March, when a 3-month-old boy was allegedly bitten and seriously injured while in the care of his babysitter.
Now, that babysitter is facing criminal charges.
Who Is Accused and What Are the Charges
Kamariea Marshall, an Ohio woman, has been charged with three counts of child endangerment following an investigation into injuries found on the infant.
Marshall was indicted in April. She turned herself in to Adult Probation on May 4 and was booked into the Lucas County Jail in Toledo, Ohio.
She is next scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, May 13.
Court records show Marshall was already on probation at the time of the alleged incident — for prior convictions of theft and assault.
What the Baby’s Mother Says Happened
The baby’s mother told reporters she had left her son with Marshall for three days while she packed her apartment, which was about to undergo renovations.
“I only had three days to pack my whole house up, so she had him for the three days that I was packing my house,” she said.
Days after the child had already been in Marshall’s care, the mother said Marshall sent her a text asking why the baby had marks on his body.
Marshall then took the child to the hospital.
When the mother arrived, the situation was far worse than she had prepared herself for.
“When I walked in that room, they said that he wasn’t breathing,” she said.
The Injuries Doctors Found
Medical staff examining the baby found a disturbing list of injuries.
According to the mother, her son had bruises on his chest, fractured ribs, a bite mark on his leg, and scratches on his cheeks.
Doctors suspected abuse and immediately contacted authorities.
Marshall allegedly told hospital staff she believed the boy was simply sick.
Baby Is Now Recovering
Despite the severity of his injuries, the baby’s mother says her son is now doing well.
She told reporters he is “doing good” and “healthy” following the alleged abuse.
The Lucas County Sheriff’s Office and Lucas County Jail had not responded to media requests for comment as of Sunday, May 10.
