Snowy Roads Blamed as Rochester Woman Hurt in Two-Vehicle Crash Near Zumbrota

ZUMBROTA, Minn. — A winter evening crash on U.S. Highway 52 near Zumbrota left a Rochester woman injured Saturday night as snow- and ice-covered roads contributed to hazardous driving conditions, authorities said.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the two-vehicle crash occurred around 7:45 p.m. on U.S. Highway 52, roughly half a mile north of Zumbrota, near the turnaround at 440th Street.

How the crash happened

Investigators said a Kia Sorrento entered the southbound lanes of Highway 52 from the turnaround when it collided with a 2025 Buick Envista traveling in the left southbound lane. The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles and brought traffic to a temporary standstill as emergency crews responded.

The 76-year-old male driver of the Kia and his 72-year-old female passenger were not injured in the crash, according to authorities.

However, the 29-year-old woman driving the Buick, a Rochester resident, sustained injuries and was transported to Saint Marys Hospital for medical treatment. A 33-year-old woman passenger in the Buick was not hurt.

Winter conditions a factor

Officials noted that snow- and ice-covered road conditions were present at the time of the crash, which may have played a role. Drivers in the area were urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution when entering or crossing highways during winter weather.

Multiple agencies responded

In addition to the Minnesota State Patrol, several local and regional agencies assisted at the scene, including:

  • Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office
  • Zumbrota Police Department
  • Zumbrota Fire Department
  • Mayo Clinic Ambulance
  • Minnesota Department of Transportation

Traffic was managed while emergency personnel cleared the scene and ensured the roadway was safe for travel.

Ongoing investigation

The Minnesota State Patrol continues to document the crash, and no citations or additional details have been released at this time. Authorities reminded drivers that winter conditions can change rapidly and that even familiar roads can become dangerous after dark when temperatures drop.

No further updates on the injured driver’s condition were immediately available.
