Horry County, South Carolina — A tragic shooting in a wooded area has left a young man dead and his teenage nephew facing prison time, after what authorities describe as a preventable and deeply unfortunate incident involving a firearm.
According to officials from the 15th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office, 18-year-old Damarion Nealy has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with the 2025 death of his uncle, 20-year-old Gregory Johnson II. The incident occurred when Nealy was just 17 years old.
What Happened
Prosecutors say the incident unfolded while the two were sitting inside a vehicle in a wooded area, where Johnson had been firing a pistol at deer. At some point, Johnson handed the firearm to his nephew and asked if he wanted to “take a shot.”
Investigators stated that Nealy, who was legally underage to possess a firearm, took the gun and pointed it toward his uncle’s head. Authorities said his finger was on the trigger with enough pressure to discharge the weapon.
The gun fired, striking Johnson in the head.
Nealy fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Emergency responders were unable to save Johnson, who died shortly afterward.
Legal Outcome
During the investigation, Nealy admitted he was holding the firearm when it went off. Prosecutors determined that the shooting did not meet the criteria for intentional murder, instead classifying it as involuntary manslaughter.
Assistant Solicitor James D. Stanko, who handled the case, stated that the charge reflected the circumstances and available evidence, calling it a fair resolution to a tragic situation.
Nealy was sentenced under the Youthful Offender Act, which allows for more flexible sentencing for young defendants. He will serve a prison term of up to five years.
A Life Cut Short
Family members described Gregory Johnson II as a motivated and hardworking young man who had recently begun building a future for himself. He had started a landscaping business with his father and was actively planning home improvement projects, including restoring family property.
Those close to him say he was driven, entrepreneurial, and deeply connected to his family.
Ongoing Reflection
The case highlights the serious risks associated with firearms, particularly when handled by individuals without proper training or legal authorization. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of responsible gun ownership and strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies.
As the community processes the loss, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a moment can turn fatal when safety is overlooked.
