They Robbed a Bank, Led Police on a Chase, and Crashed Into a Tree — Houston Suspects Now in Custody

HOUSTON — A tense police chase in southeast Houston ended Monday with four robbery suspects in custody after their vehicle slammed into a tree, bringing a chaotic sequence of events to a halt.

According to the Houston Police Department, the suspects were linked to a bank robbery that took place earlier in the day inside a Walmart store in northwest Houston. Investigators say surveillance footage captured the group fleeing the scene in a vehicle, which was later spotted by officers, triggering the pursuit.

The chase came to a violent end in the Museum District when the suspects lost control and crashed into a tree with enough force to strip bark and scatter debris across the area. One suspect suffered a broken leg in the crash, while the other three attempted to escape on foot but were quickly apprehended by responding officers.

In a surprising turn, one suspect—identified as a juvenile—ran into a nearby gas station and barricaded himself inside a restroom. Officers were able to track him using discarded clothing and loose cash found outside, eventually taking him into custody without further incident.

Witnesses described a heavy police response, with multiple patrol units, unmarked vehicles, and helicopters circling overhead, adding to the intensity of the situation.

Authorities are now investigating whether the group is connected to a string of similar robberies in recent weeks, many involving retail locations with in-store banks. The total amount stolen remains unclear as the investigation continues.
