Authorities in Swansea, Massachusetts have charged two adults after a troubling report that a second-grade student may have brought a handgun to an elementary school, raising concerns about child safety and firearm storage.
Police say they were alerted Monday to an anonymous tip claiming the child brought the weapon to Mark G. Hoyle Elementary School on April 1. Investigators later executed a search warrant at a nearby home, where they discovered multiple firearms, several of them loaded.
According to officials, none of the residents had the required firearm identification credentials. Authorities seized several weapons, including handguns, a shotgun, and a rifle, along with ammunition.
Charges have been filed against Christopher Spangler, 51, and Heather Spangler, 43. The charges include improper storage of firearms near a minor, illegal possession of weapons and ammunition, and reckless endangerment of a child. They are scheduled to appear in court later this month.
Police emphasized that the situation could have turned tragic but was contained before anyone was harmed.
School officials acknowledged delays in notifying law enforcement and said a full review of procedures is underway. Parents and community members have since called for stronger safety measures while maintaining a supportive environment for students.
The incident has sparked renewed discussion around responsible gun ownership and school safety protocols.
