Yorktown, New York: A close-knit Westchester County community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman, a first-year college student who was fatally shot in Chicago early Thursday morning.
Gorman, a student at Loyola University Chicago, was walking with a group of friends near Lake Michigan around 1:30 a.m. when an individual wearing a face covering approached and opened fire. The incident occurred just a short distance from the university’s campus. Authorities reported that Gorman was struck in the head and tragically died at the scene.
Her sudden death has left family, friends, classmates, and former teachers devastated.
In a statement, her parents, Tom and Jess Gorman, described their daughter as “the kindest soul,” saying she was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by everyone whose life she touched.
Gorman graduated from Yorktown High School last year and was known for her bright spirit, compassion, and strong involvement in athletics. She had a passion for field hockey and remained active in the local sports community, where her family has long-standing ties.
Yorktown Central School District Superintendent Dr. Ron Hattar shared a message with the school community expressing deep sorrow over the loss. He described Gorman as a beloved graduate whose positive impact on students and staff was lasting and meaningful. The district has made counselors and members of its clinical team available to provide support for students and staff during this difficult time.
