$14,000 Jewelry Scam Busted, 3 Accused in Necklace Snatching Cases

A coordinated scam targeting unsuspecting victims in Baltimore County has led to the recovery of more than $14,000 worth of stolen jewelry and the arrest of three individuals, according to local police.

Authorities say the case involves a series of calculated thefts and robberies that began earlier this year, primarily in the Catonsville area. The suspects allegedly used distraction tactics to get close to victims before quickly stealing valuable necklaces and fleeing the scene.

How the Scam Worked

Police explained that the suspects approached victims in public areas, often parking lots or roadside locations. They would start friendly conversations—asking for directions or offering what they described as a “blessing”—to gain trust and reduce suspicion.

Once the victims were within close range, the suspects allegedly grabbed necklaces directly from their necks and escaped immediately. The quick and unexpected nature of these encounters left little time for victims to react.

Officials described the group’s behavior as highly coordinated and opportunistic.

Series of Incidents Across Months

Investigators linked the three suspects to at least seven separate incidents between January and April. These included both robberies and thefts across multiple locations, particularly along Baltimore National Pike and nearby areas.

The repeated pattern in each case helped authorities identify and track the suspects over time.

Arrests and Recovery

Police identified the suspects as Mihail Alexandru (20), Versalona Nicu (26), and Mihaela Alexandru (23). All three were taken into custody and transported to the Baltimore County Detention Center, where they are currently being held without bail.

During the investigation, officers recovered more than 150 pieces of jewelry believed to have been stolen during the spree. The total estimated value of the recovered items is around $14,000.

Police Warning to Residents

Law enforcement officials are urging residents to remain cautious when approached by strangers, especially in parking lots or while inside vehicles. Scammers often rely on distraction and close physical proximity to carry out such crimes.

Police emphasized the importance of maintaining distance and avoiding unnecessary interaction with unknown individuals who attempt to draw attention or ask for help in suspicious ways.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. Anyone with information related to similar incidents is encouraged to contact Baltimore County Police.

The investigation remains active as officials work to determine if the suspects were involved in other cases beyond those already identified.
