A tense rescue operation unfolded Saturday evening off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts, after a fishing boat was driven onto rocks by strong waves, forcing emergency crews to act quickly.
According to local authorities, the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. near Atlantic Road when a 40-foot fishing vessel ran aground. Responding teams included the Gloucester Police Department, Fire Department, Harbormaster, and the U.S. Coast Guard, all working together under challenging weather conditions.
Officials reported that wind gusts exceeded 20 mph, while rough seas—ranging between 2 to 4 feet—continuously slammed the vessel against the rocks. Although the two crew members onboard were not immediately injured, the situation quickly became dangerous as the boat’s hull began taking significant damage.
Initial attempts by the Coast Guard to free the vessel were unsuccessful due to the strong waves. With conditions worsening, first responders shifted focus to safely evacuating the crew.
In a coordinated effort, firefighters and rescue teams threw lines to the stranded individuals, guiding them carefully from the unstable boat to solid ground. Despite the harsh conditions, both crew members were brought to safety without any reported injuries.
Authorities noted that while the rescue was successful, the vessel itself sustained serious damage due to repeated impact with the rocks.
The incident highlights the unpredictable nature of coastal conditions and the importance of rapid, coordinated emergency response in ensuring lives are protected.
