According to Akron Police Department, the incident occurred on March 7 in the parking lot of a Restaurant Depot store. Authorities say 2-year-old Lucia Ayala became trapped when a powered third-row seat inside a Hyundai Palisade unexpectedly collapsed.

Emergency calls from the scene reveal the panic in those moments. A caller told dispatchers that a child was “under a chair in the car,” as responders rushed to the location.

Bystanders managed to free the toddler before first responders arrived. However, she was unresponsive. She was transported by emergency crews to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Police described the incident as deeply distressing. Officials noted that despite quick action from people at the scene and emergency responders, the child could not be saved.

The case was reviewed by the medical examiner, who ruled the death accidental. Authorities emphasized that the child was in a vulnerable position when the seat mechanism activated.

What Caused the Incident

Investigators found that the SUV’s electronically powered seat may not have properly detected an obstruction while moving. This failure allowed the seat to continue closing, ultimately trapping the child.

A recall was issued affecting more than 69,000 vehicles across the United States and Canada. Hyundai confirmed that the problem involves second- and third-row power seats that may not adequately sense contact with a person or object.

The company has since developed a software update designed to fix the issue. Owners can install the update free of cost, either through dealerships or direct download where supported.

Sales of the affected models have now resumed after the fix was finalized.
