A 22-year-old man died Sunday evening after his vehicle crashed into the South Platte River near Commerce City, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
State troopers said the crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of East 58th Avenue and York Street. The driver was traveling eastbound when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle cut across oncoming traffic and left the roadway.
Authorities said the car went airborne after traveling off a large embankment before landing upside down in the South Platte River. Witnesses in the area quickly rushed to help, attempting to pull the driver from the submerged vehicle as emergency crews were dispatched to the scene.
First responders arrived within minutes and assisted in removing the driver from the car. Despite lifesaving efforts, officials said the man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Investigators have not yet released the identity of the driver, pending notification of family members. It is also unclear what caused the vehicle to cross into opposing lanes before leaving the road. Troopers said factors such as speed, impairment, or medical issues have not been ruled out and remain part of the ongoing investigation.
The crash led to temporary traffic disruptions in the area as emergency crews worked to secure the scene and recover the vehicle from the river. Portions of East 58th Avenue near York Street were restricted while investigators documented evidence and cleared debris.
Officials are reminding drivers to remain alert, especially near intersections and roadways adjacent to waterways or steep embankments. Even a brief loss of control, authorities said, can lead to severe or fatal consequences.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information is encouraged to contact Colorado State Patrol as the investigation continues.
