A routine traffic checkpoint turned into a massive drug bust when deputies intercepted a Jackson woman allegedly carrying nearly half a million dollars worth of drugs — headed straight for a state prison.
Rankin County Sheriff’s deputies were running a roadside safety checkpoint around 1 a.m. on Highway 468, located near the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility, when a dark-colored passenger car slowly approached.
The driver, Rachel Marie Thomas of Jackson, was stopped and questioned. Deputies said they quickly developed probable cause to search the vehicle — and what they found inside shocked even seasoned investigators.
What Was Found Inside the Car
Inside Thomas’s vehicle, deputies discovered:
- Multiple pounds of marijuana
- THC wax
- Methamphetamine
- Suspected liquid fentanyl
- Oxycodone
- Two large bottles of promethazine
- Multiple cell phones
- Drug paraphernalia
- Alcohol concealed inside water bottles
The total estimated street value of all seized items: approximately $400,000.
She Was Heading to the Prison — Not Away From It
Perhaps the most alarming detail of the entire case — Thomas was not fleeing from anything. She was driving toward the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility.
Investigators believe she allegedly planned to smuggle all of the seized drugs and contraband directly into the prison.
Charges and Bond
Thomas was arrested on the spot and charged with:
- Trafficking a controlled substance
- Possession of a controlled substance
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
She was booked into the Rankin County Adult Detention Center and is currently being held on a $1.1 million bond.
This case remains under active investigation by the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department.
