Indiana Just Changed When Your Teen Can Drive Alone — And It's Sooner Than You Think

If you have a teenager counting down the days to their 16th birthday, Indiana just made that milestone even bigger. Starting July 1, 2025, teens in the state can get a full driver’s license on their birthday — no extra waiting required.

Gov. Mike Braun signed House Enrolled Act 1200, eliminating the previous rule that made teens wait 90 days after turning 16 before they could legally drive on their own.

“This commonsense change gives families more flexibility while maintaining the strong safety standards and training requirements that help keep Indiana roads safe.”
— Gov. Mike Braun

But before your teen starts celebrating too hard — the requirements to earn that license haven’t gotten any easier. They still need to put in the work before they ever get behind the wheel alone.

What teens still need to qualify

  • Hold an Indiana Learner’s Permit for at least180 days
  • Complete a certifieddriver’s education program
  • Submit asigned logof supervised driving hours
  • Pass avision screening test
  • Pass adriving test(can be done through driver’s ed providers)

The same law also opens a new door for 16-year-olds: they can now apply for a motorcycle endorsement, provided they meet the requirements — something previously limited to older riders.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles confirmed that beyond the eliminated wait period, everything else stays the same. The change is purely about timing, not about lowering the bar to get on the road.

For many Indiana families, the practical impact is real — especially for teens who live in rural areas or need to drive themselves to work, school, or extracurriculars.

Bottom line: The 90-day post-birthday wait is gone. If your teen has cleared all the requirements by their 16th birthday, they can walk out of the BMV with a license that same day. The law takes effect July 1, 2025.
