A 5-month-old baby girl is dead after drowning at a hotel in Lancaster County on Monday evening, and investigators are now working to piece together exactly what happened.
The infant died at the Best Western Plus Intercourse Village Inn & Suites in Leacock Township, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.
She was only five months old.
Dispatcher Received Cardiac Arrest Call Around 6 p.m.
Authorities were alerted to the drowning around 6 p.m. on May 11.
The dispatcher was told that the baby had been pulled from the water and was in cardiac arrest.
First responders rushed to the hotel and immediately began efforts to resuscitate the infant. Despite their best efforts, they were not successful.
The baby girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
Multiple Agencies Have Launched an Investigation
This is not being treated as a simple accident.
The Pennsylvania State Police, the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office, and the Department of Human Services’ Office of Children, Youth, and Families are all actively investigating the child’s death.
The baby’s mother is cooperating with investigators, authorities confirmed.
Best Western also released a statement saying the company is cooperating with local government officials in connection with the incident.
Autopsy Ordered to Determine Cause of Death
The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to officially determine the baby’s cause and manner of death.
Results of that examination have not yet been released.
