Hialeah, Florida — A quiet neighborhood in Hialeah was shaken after a disturbing domestic incident left two family members dead and a 79-year-old man facing serious charges.
Authorities say the case centers around a violent dispute that may have been fueled by financial tensions inside a shared apartment.
What Happened
According to investigators with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, 79-year-old Jose Vidal has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder with a weapon. The victims were identified as his wife, Eugenia Chang, also 79, and his 53-year-old step-son, Jim Chang.
The incident is believed to have occurred on Sunday, April 20, inside their apartment at the Antigua at Country Club of Miami complex. Police say the situation escalated following accusations that Vidal had taken a large sum of money from his step-son.
Investigators revealed that tensions had been building, with the step-son allegedly planning to remove Vidal from the home.
Conflicting Story Raises Questions
Initially, Vidal told authorities he had been attacked by two unknown men inside the apartment and lost consciousness. He claimed that when he woke up, he discovered both victims had been fatally stabbed.
He then reportedly called 911 and rode his bicycle approximately six miles to Memorial West Hospital, where medical staff noted only a superficial wound.
However, as investigators continued examining the case, several inconsistencies began to emerge.
Evidence Points to a Different Narrative
Detectives later uncovered physical evidence at the scene, including bloody shoe prints and Vidal’s sandals. Surveillance footage reportedly showed him disposing of several bags in a dumpster, though authorities have not yet confirmed what was inside.
In another unusual detail, officials say Vidal stopped at a gas station to purchase lottery tickets while on his way to the hospital.
During questioning, investigators say Vidal admitted to a confrontation with his step-son and acknowledged that he was being forced out of the apartment. He reportedly expressed fear of losing his home again, stating he had nowhere else to go.
Community Reaction
Neighbors described the incident as shocking and out of character for the area. One resident, who identified herself only as Edeana, said she learned about the tragedy after deputies distributed flyers seeking information.
She described the victims as quiet and not problematic, adding that the situation left many in the community confused and unsettled.
Legal Status
Vidal has since appeared in court, where a judge found probable cause for the charges. He is currently being held without bond as the investigation continues.
Authorities have not released further details about the timeline or any additional evidence, but officials say the case remains under active investigation.
Ongoing Investigation
Law enforcement continues to piece together the events leading up to the incident, focusing on the role financial conflict may have played.
Officials urge anyone with additional information to contact the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office as they work to complete the investigation.
