HIGHWAY 11, Texas — Makynna Tumlinson was not supposed to make it past birth.
Doctors gave her a 2% chance of survival. Her family was told to prepare for a stillborn.
She beat those odds — and spent 18 years making sure everyone around her felt seen, protected, and loved.
On the day she died, she was on her way to a new summer job.
A Morning That Changed Everything
Her mother, Stephanie Tumlinson, spoke to Makynna just before she left the house.
“She was headed to a new job, and we had talked right before she left to go to work,” Stephanie said.
That was the last conversation they had.
When her father grew worried, he checked her location on his phone. It pointed to a crash site on Highway 11.
He drove there himself.
“From that point on we were just panicking, hoping that they got something wrong,” Stephanie said.
They had not gotten it wrong.
A Girl Who Never Turned Anyone Away
In the days after Makynna’s death, Stephanie began receiving messages from mothers she had never met.
They told her that their children had been bullied — until Makynna stepped in.
“I had moms reaching out to me that I didn’t even know, saying that their kid was bullied until they met Makynna,” Stephanie said.
She was a cheerleader. Student council president. Prom queen.
But more than any of that, she was the girl who would befriend anyone — regardless of age, background, or story.
“I’m hoping that she’s known as the girl that never turned down a friend, that she would have befriended anyone at all ages,” her mother said.
“Sunshine” — A Nickname She Earned Every Day
Makynna had a nickname at school: Sunshine.
It was not given lightly.
“She had a nickname Sunshine because she brightened everybody’s day,” Stephanie said.
Her senior parking space at school has since become a memorial covered in flowers, stuffed animals, and candles.
Stephanie and her husband had painted that parking space together with Makynna. Now it is the place her classmates come to grieve.
A Love No Parent Should Ever Have to Receive
The outpouring of support has been overwhelming — and heartbreaking at the same time.
“I’ve never had this much outpouring of love. Like, honestly, I’ve never. I don’t even know how to take it in,” Stephanie said.
She was born against all odds. She lived every one of her 18 years fully.
And now her mother is left searching for the words no parent should ever have to find.
“Nobody should have to bury their children. It’s the hardest part. I keep thinking it’s a nightmare that I’m going to wake up from and that she’s going to walk in the door,” Stephanie said.
