Newark, New Jersey – A tragic incident unfolded in Newark earlier this week when a pickup truck crashed into a neighborhood laundromat, resulting in the death of an elderly woman and injuries to another person. Authorities have since arrested the driver believed to be responsible.
What Happened
According to officials, the crash occurred Monday afternoon along Irvington Avenue at a strip mall where the Ivy Hill Laundromat is located. Investigators say a Dodge Ram pickup truck collided with an SUV before both vehicles were sent crashing straight through the front of the laundromat.
Inside, around 10 people were going about their day when the vehicles suddenly tore through the building, sending glass, debris, and metal flying across the space.
Victim and Injuries
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that 81-year-old Ruth Benjamin was sitting near the entrance at the time of the crash. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A laundromat worker was also injured in the impact. Witnesses described the force of the crash as so strong that the worker was thrown backward. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, though officials have not released details about her current condition.
Arrest and Charges
Authorities identified the driver as Aides Benites Rivera. He was taken into custody and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
