Central California Weather Alert: Cold Weather Advisory Issued for Interior Valleys Until Monday Morning

Interior parts of Central California are facing a stretch of unusually cold overnight temperatures as a Cold Weather Advisory goes into effect early Monday, raising safety concerns for residents, pets, and agricultural communities.

According to the National Weather Service Bay Area, the advisory will be in place from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday, covering San Benito County, the southern Salinas Valley, interior valleys of the North Bay and East Bay, and interior areas of Monterey County, including locations near Pinnacles National Park.

Near-Freezing Temperatures Expected Overnight

Forecasts show overnight lows dropping into the low to mid-30s, with some colder pockets potentially reaching the upper 20s in rural areas such as Bradley and Fort Hunter Liggett. The coldest conditions are expected during the pre-dawn hours, when winds calm and heat loss increases in valley locations.

Meteorologists say these conditions are typical of winter high-pressure patterns that allow cold air to settle in inland valleys, especially after clear evenings.

Safety Concerns for People, Pets, and Livestock

Officials warn that prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can increase the risk of hypothermia, particularly for unhoused individuals, older adults, and those without adequate heating. Residents are urged to check on neighbors who may be vulnerable and to take advantage of any local warming shelters that may open overnight.

Pet owners are advised to bring animals indoors, ensure adequate bedding for livestock, and provide unfrozen water sources. Cold conditions can also be dangerous for young or outdoor animals that are not acclimated to near-freezing temperatures.

Agricultural Impacts Across the Salinas Valley

The advisory also carries implications for agriculture, especially across the Salinas Valley, where frost-sensitive crops and irrigation systems may be affected. Farmers are encouraged to take protective measures such as covering plants, running frost protection systems where available, and monitoring equipment for freeze-related damage.

Even brief exposure to freezing temperatures can harm leafy greens, berries, and other winter crops common to the region.

Heater Safety and Cold-Weather Precautions

Emergency officials are reminding residents to use heaters safely during the cold snap. Grills, generators, and fuel-burning devices should never be used indoors, as they can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup. Space heaters should be kept away from flammable materials and turned off before sleeping.

Dressing in layers, closing drafts, and limiting overnight outdoor activity can also help reduce cold-related risks.

What to Expect After Monday Morning

Temperatures are expected to slowly rebound after sunrise Monday, with daytime highs returning to more typical winter levels by late morning. However, forecasters caution that additional cold nights are possible as winter weather patterns continue across interior California.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local forecasts and be prepared for further advisories as conditions evolve.
