Kansas City, Missouri – Streets across the metro are already seeing water build up along curbs and low-lying areas this afternoon as repeated rounds of heavy rain move through the region, creating growing concerns about flash flooding.
According to the National Weather Service office in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Flood Watch remains in effect through late tonight. Meteorologists say storms are tracking over the same locations, dumping intense rainfall on already saturated ground. In some neighborhoods, totals could reach between 2 to 4 inches, especially in areas south of U.S. Highway 50.
Communities including Overland Park, Independence, and Lee’s Summit are being closely monitored as drainage systems and creeks begin to feel the strain. Major roadways such as I-35, I-70, and I-435 may experience ponding water, making driving conditions more dangerous during heavier downpours.
Officials are urging residents to avoid low-water crossings and never attempt to drive through flooded roads, as conditions can change quickly and become life-threatening within minutes.
Alongside the flooding concerns, storm activity is also intensifying. Forecasters warn that some of these storms could turn severe later in the day, bringing damaging wind gusts and large hail. There is also a small but notable chance of a brief tornado developing as atmospheric instability increases into the evening hours.
Emergency crews remain on alert as conditions continue to evolve, with the heaviest impacts expected through tonight.
Relief is expected by Sunday morning as the system begins to move east. Skies will gradually clear, and temperatures will rise to around 70°F, helping roads dry out and improving overall conditions across the metro.
Looking ahead, Kansas City will see a quick transition into a warmer and calmer weather pattern. Sunshine returns Monday with highs in the mid-70s, followed by even warmer temperatures nearing 80°F by Tuesday. The break will be short-lived, however, as another chance of rain is expected later next week.
