AutoZone Burglary Leads to Fatal Crash on Katy Freeway in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas — A burglary at an AutoZone early Wednesday morning led to a fatal crash on the Katy Freeway, shutting down multiple westbound lanes for several hours, according to Houston police.

The Houston Police Department said officers responded to reports of a crash on the westbound Katy Freeway near Witte Road at approximately 3:13 a.m. Preliminary information indicates the crash was connected to a burglary call involving a nearby AutoZone location.

Authorities confirmed that at least one person was killed in the collision. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Traffic impacts from the crash were significant. As of 6:25 a.m., three westbound lanes of the freeway remained blocked, according to the Houston TranStar traffic monitoring system. Motorists experienced major delays during the morning commute as emergency crews worked at the scene.

Video from OnScene TV showed extensive damage at the crash site, with debris scattered across the roadway and the freeway’s feeder road also partially blocked. Emergency responders, including police and fire crews, were seen conducting an investigation and clearing the area.

Police have not released details about how the burglary directly led to the crash or whether any suspects are in custody. It is also unclear if the person who died was connected to the burglary or was another motorist.

The Houston Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while cleanup and investigative efforts continued.
