Northwest Miami-Dade Residents Demand Answers After Massive Warehouse Fire Burns for Days Near Homes

A massive warehouse fire in northwest Miami-Dade has sparked fear, frustration, and renewed debate over industrial zoning near residential neighborhoods. As thick smoke continues to linger in the air, residents are questioning why a warehouse the size of two Costco stores was allowed to operate just steps away from family homes.

The five-alarm blaze, which began shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday in the 20600 block of Northwest 47th Avenue, is expected to burn for several days. Fire crews remain on scene, working around the clock to extinguish hot spots and contain the damage.

Air Quality Concerns Grow as Fire Continues

Although conditions were calmer Friday compared to the chaotic early hours of the fire, officials warned that the air quality in surrounding neighborhoods remains unsafe.

Residents have been urged to stay indoors, especially those with medical or respiratory conditions. Authorities are advising families to keep windows and doors closed due to ongoing smoky conditions.

For neighbors who have lived in the area for decades, the situation feels like a disaster waiting to happen.

“It Should Not Be This Close to Homes”

Jesus Fuentes, who has lived less than a block from the warehouse for more than 30 years, said residents had long worried about the risks.

“That should not be so close to family homes,” he said, expressing concerns shared by many in the neighborhood.

The scale of the building — described by fire officials as roughly the size of two Costco stores — has intensified questions about zoning decisions and safety oversight.

Hundreds of Firefighters Battle the Blaze

At the height of the emergency, hundreds of firefighters responded to the scene. Crews have made significant progress in knocking down hot spots throughout the structure, but the fire’s size and intensity have made it a prolonged operation.

Despite the severity of the blaze, authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported. However, several vehicles were destroyed, and dozens of employees are now temporarily out of work.

Workers Return to Retrieve Vehicles

On Friday, some employees returned to the site hoping to retrieve vehicles left behind during the chaotic evacuation.

Ruciel Tarrago said he had to leave his car when the fire broke out and wasn’t able to retrieve it initially. Along with about a dozen other workers, he was later escorted onto the property by fire officials.

“I finally got my car,” said Rossana Tejera, explaining that her husband had run from the building when flames erupted, leaving their vehicle behind.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials have not yet released details about what may have sparked the massive blaze.

Meanwhile, residents continue to demand answers about how such a large industrial facility was permitted so close to homes — and whether changes are needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As smoke continues to drift over northwest Miami-Dade, one thing is clear: the fire has ignited more than just a warehouse — it has reignited a community-wide debate over safety, zoning, and accountability.
