BROWNSVILLE, Tennessee — More than 100 students had gathered at a park Friday night, dressed up and ready for prom photos. It was supposed to be one of the happiest nights of the school year.
Then the bullets started flying.
Gunfire broke out at Webb Banks Passive Park on the 900 block of Key Corner Street, about 60 miles northeast of Memphis, sending the crowd into chaos.
Officers arrived within minutes to find five people struck by gunshots. All five were rushed to a local hospital. One of them — a young woman with plans, dreams, and a future ahead of her — did not make it.
A community is mourning a student full of promise
Haywood County Schools identified the victim as Saturah Hayes.
In a statement posted to Facebook, the district remembered her as someone who showed up every day with purpose.
“Saturah was a hard-working student with a positive attitude. She was full of potential and promise with hopes and plans for the future that will now remain unrealized,” the district wrote.
Schools announced they would be closed Monday to give students, staff, and families time to grieve. Prom was shut down early following the incident.
Over 100 students watched the night fall apart
Witnesses told police the park was packed — more than 100 teens and numerous vehicles had gathered just for the pre-prom photo session.
It was supposed to be a celebration. Within moments, it became a crime scene.
Tennessee Bureau of Investigation special agents are now working alongside the Brownsville Police Department to investigate what officials are calling an apparent homicide.
“TBI special agents are working alongside the Brownsville Police Department to investigate an apparent homicide that left multiple individuals injured,” a TBI spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
No suspect has been named. No motive has been released.
Local leaders are calling for justice
Haywood County Sheriff Billy Garrett Jr. did not hold back in describing what happened.
“A senseless tragic event,” he called it — one that turned a night of celebration into one of the worst nights this community has seen in recent memory.
“I will commit this sheriff’s office and all our resources to bring justice for her family,” Garrett Jr. said. “Our county is a great place to live and is a strong, close-knit community, especially in times like these.”
Brownsville Mayor William D. Rawls extended his condolences directly to the family and the injured.
“To the family of the loved one who was lost, and to those who were injured, I extend my deepest condolences and prayers,” Rawls said. “Our entire community mourns with you, and we stand beside you during this incredibly difficult time.”
A night no one will forget
What happened in Brownsville on Friday is a reminder of how quickly an ordinary moment can be shattered — and how deeply violence ripples through a small, close-knit community.
Saturah Hayes came to the park to take photos before prom. She deserved to go home, go to prom, and live the life she had planned.
The investigation is ongoing.
