Arlington Woman Killed in High-Speed Crash; Family Speaks as Street Racing Probe Continues

An Arlington family is mourning the loss of 53-year-old Tanya Cypert after a violent crash that investigators believe may have involved street racing.

Her sons, Chance and Ethan Cypert, returned to the intersection of Eden Road and South Cooper Street this week — the same spot where their mother was struck last Friday while attempting to turn toward her home just blocks away. She later died from her injuries.

Chance recalled the moment he realized something was terribly wrong.

“I knew it was serious,” he said. “When I called my mom’s phone, it wasn’t her who answered. It was an off-duty officer who was trying to help her.”

According to the brothers, their mother remained alive for nearly an hour following the collision.

Surveillance Video Raises Questions

Footage captured by a nearby business shows two vehicles traveling northbound on Cooper Street at what appears to be a very high speed just moments before the crash. One of the vehicles collided with Cypert’s car as she was making a turn.

Detectives are now examining whether the drivers were engaged in street racing at the time of the crash. Residents in the area say speeding has long been a concern.

“I live close by,” Ethan said. “You can hear engines revving almost every night. It echoes down the road all the way to the highway. It’s been happening for a while.”

Remembering a Life of Compassion

As the investigation continues, the brothers are choosing to focus on their mother’s character — one they describe as deeply compassionate and full of love.

“She cared about everyone,” Ethan shared. “It didn’t matter who you were. She had a huge heart.”

Even in their grief, Chance said he believes his mother would have shown empathy toward others involved in the crash.

“I hope the driver is okay,” he said. “I know they’re hurt too. That’s just how she was — always thinking about others first.”

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have confirmed that the driver who struck Cypert remains hospitalized and has not yet been interviewed. At this time, no charges have been filed as investigators continue to review evidence.

For her sons, the loss is immeasurable.

“I’m just grateful we got to call her Mom,” Chance said.
